Engineers Australia imposes the following CPD Hour requirements for those with Chartered or NER credentials: To get or keep these credentials, you need to complete at least 150 hours of professional development activities every three years.

If you work in one area of practice, breakdown of the specific hour requirement is as follows:

• 50 hours must relate to your area of practice
• 10 hours must cover risk management
• 15 hours must be about business and management skills
• 75 hours must cover a range of activities relevant to your career interests.

If you work in more than one area of practice or area of engineering then you must record at least 50 hours for each area across the three-year period. If technical CPD activities overlap, then the same hours can be used for each area of practice.

For example, if you are Chartered or Registered for both civil and structural areas of practice or areas of engineering, the hour requirement would be broken down as follows:

• 50 hours to civil area of practice
• 50 hours to structural area of practice
• 10 hours for risk management
• 15 hours for business and management skills
• 40 hours for any other CPD activities.

If you’re an engineering academic or teacher, you must also demonstrate at least 40 hours of industry involvement in each three-year period.

CPD is any sort of training or learning that helps to expand your knowledge, maintain your technical skills and progress your engineering career. Good CPD should help you to:

-

• maintain your technical competence
• retain and enhance your workplace effectiveness
• learn good leadership skills and how to mentor others
• successfully deal with career challenges
• better serve the community.

CPD can be taken in many ways including formal, structured learning as well as private study. Engineers Australia has conditions around the types of CPD you complete towards your continued membership. CPD can be:

• any tertiary course taken as an individual course or for a formal post-graduate award
• short courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, technical inspections and meetings
• workplace learning activities that extend competence in your area of practice or area of engineering
• private study that extends your knowledge and skill
• service to the engineering profession
• preparation and presentation of materials for courses and conferences
• tertiary teaching or academic research
• structured activities that meet the objectives of the CPD policy.

Engineering New Zealand requires completing a minimum of 40 hours of CPD activities each year unless you’re on a career break or you’re a retired member with an exemption. There is no limit on the CPD activities you can complete.

CPD can be comprised of tertiary courses, short courses, workshops, seminars, discussion groups, conferences, technical inspections and non-routine technical meetings that contribute to your development as an engineering professional.

Registered Professional Engineers (Pathway 1) must complete 50 hours of relevant education and training per CPD year (12 months from your registration date, and each anniversary):

• At least 20 hours "Formal" (structured activity with an assessment); Informal activities are capped at 30 hours/year

• At least 20 hours relevant to your area/s of practice (including keeping National Construction Code knowledge current)

• At least 3 hours risk management

• At least 3 hours business and management skills

• Remainder relevant to your work and class of registration

• Each activity must take at least 30 minutes; claim the provider-designated time, rounded down to the nearest 0.5 hour

• Up to 10 surplus hours may be carried into the next CPD year

• If registered in multiple classes, 15 hours per area must relate to each area

• Keep written records (with supporting evidence) for 5 years

To continue to be eligible for registration, RPEQs must comply with the Board’s Continuing Registration Requirements (CRR) Policy (2.02). BPEQ’s CRR policy states that RPEQs must:

• complete a minimum of 150 hours of structured continuing professional development (CPD) over a three-year period leading up to the renewal or restoration of their registration;
  
• undertake a minimum 75% (112.5 hours) of the 150 hours as technical CPD;
  
• undertake a maximum 25% (37.5 hours) of the 150 hours as non-technical CPD;
  
• undertake as a minimum, 1 hour of non-technical CPD covering ethics; and
  
• undertake as a minimum, 1 hour of non-technical CPD covering risk management.

CPD is designed to extend the RPEQ’s knowledge and skills in their area/s of engineering.
